Residential vs Datacenter vs Mobile Proxies: Which One Do You Actually Need?

Three proxy types, wildly different prices, and a lot of people buying the wrong one. A plain breakdown of what each is good for and where each falls apart.

Quick question. If your browser fingerprint is flawless but your IP is on a list that every anti-fraud system already flags as "datacenter," how anonymous are you?

Not very. And that's the trap a lot of people fall into. They obsess over canvas and WebGL spoofing, then route everything through a $2 datacenter proxy and wonder why they're still getting captchas and account locks. The IP is half the story, and the type of proxy you pick decides how that half goes.

There are three main types. They are not interchangeable, and the price differences are enormous for real reasons.

Datacenter proxies

These come from servers sitting in data centers. Fast, cheap, sold in bulk. You can get thousands of them for pocket change.

The problem is baked into what they are. Their IP ranges are known. Anti-fraud companies maintain lists of datacenter IP blocks and flag them on sight, because no normal person browses Instagram from an Amazon server. So the moment a detection system sees a datacenter IP, your trust score drops before you've done anything.

Where they're fine: scraping public data, tasks where nobody's running fraud detection, anything speed-sensitive and low-stakes. Where they fall apart: dApps, exchanges, social accounts, anything that actively scores you. For account work they're the weakest option, full stop.

Residential proxies

These route your traffic through real home internet connections, actual ISPs assigned to actual houses. To a website, the traffic looks like it's coming from an ordinary person on Comcast or Deutsche Telekom, because technically it is.

This is the sweet spot for most people doing account-sensitive work. The IP carries the trust of a normal residential connection, so you're not starting every session already flagged. For crypto, farming, and multi-account setups, this is the sensible default.

The tradeoffs are real though. Residential proxies cost a lot more than datacenter, often billed by bandwidth, which adds up. They can be slower, and quality varies wildly between providers. Some "residential" pools are recycled, overused, or already burned by other customers before you. Cheap residential is sometimes just datacenter with a nicer label, so provider reputation matters more than the marketing.

Mobile proxies

The top tier, and the most expensive. These use IPs from mobile carriers, the same addresses your phone gets on 4G or 5G.

What makes them powerful is how carriers assign mobile IPs. Thousands of real phone users share and rotate through the same pool of addresses. So if a site blocks a mobile IP because one user misbehaved, it risks blocking a huge number of completely legitimate people. Sites know this, so they're extremely reluctant to flag mobile IPs. That reluctance is exactly what you're paying for.

For the hardest targets, platforms with aggressive detection that flag everything else, mobile is sometimes the only thing that works reliably. For everything else it's overkill, and the price is genuinely hard to justify unless you need it.

The mistake underneath the mistake

Picking the right type still doesn't save you if you get the basics wrong. Two things sink people constantly.

First, sharing one proxy across many accounts. If ten accounts all appear from the same IP, they're linked by that IP no matter how carefully you spoofed each browser. The rule of thumb is one clean IP per identity you want to keep separate. How many that means in practice is its own question, and it comes down to how many identities you're keeping apart.

Second, leaking around the proxy entirely. WebRTC can reveal your real IP through STUN requests even with a proxy configured, and some setups tunnel HTTP while letting DNS resolve through your real ISP. A perfect proxy with a WebRTC leak behind it is like a great disguise with your name tag still on. After any proxy setup, test it and confirm the only IP anything sees is the one you intended.

What to actually buy

For most people doing multi-account or crypto work, residential proxies from a provider with a decent reputation, one IP per identity. Don't cheap out into datacenter for anything that gets scored, and don't overpay for mobile unless a specific target is forcing your hand.
